amazingly, *all* of the kids were good. They raised their hands, they said please and thank you, they lined up politely to pet the snake, they even asked intelligent and interesting questions.

Kids are not stupid: anything that's Important to them they can treat with great respect. It's just that 3rd grade class usually isn't that Important; you and the snake clearly were.
