Well, when I heard the rationale one person had for allowing Snuffleupagus to be seen by others, I couldn't argue. Basically, (so the claim went) they didn't want children to think that if they had a non-obvious secret, they couldn't tell anyone because they wouldn't be believed. I'm not sure it was necessary to do this, but I did understand the idea that, once someone had brought this issue up, the writers would probably find it impossible to decide that the risk was acceptable.
