Meme-a-riffic

Okay, since everyone else has already jumped on the bandwagon, I guess I'll play along.

Ten Things I've Done That You Probably Haven't:

1) Milked an alpaca.
2) Been hospitalized in the terminal ward with a rare blood disorder.
3) Translated the entirety of Fabritio Caroso's 'Il Balarino' from 16th-century Italian to modern English.
4) Cow surfed.
5) Fended off drunken advances from a Babylon 5 actor who mistook me for a professional dominatrix.
6) Snorkeled with manatees.
7) Posed for portraits at a late-night garden party in Tennesee wearing nothing but a chain mail bikini.
8) Had a major pop star give me an autographed pair of his undershorts.
9) Entered the Pillsbury Bake-off.
10) Jumped backwards down the entire staircase in the Statue of Liberty.

Not nearly as exciting as most of my friends, somehow....

Why at the Statue of Liberty? Because I was seven years old, and I was bored, and my cousin (who had severe ADHD, back before there were meds for it) suggested it. Also because it scared my dad, so it was fun.

The blood disorder was Henoch-Schoenlein Purpura.

You too? I admit, I wasn't put in the terminal ward. The first hospital my parents took me to told us "We don't know what it is. Go home, give him aspirin. It'll work itself out.", so we went hospital hopping...

From what I've read, that wasn't too far off from what they'd have done if they did know what it was (modulo a bazillion tests to make sure there were no complications), but my mother did not take well to being told they didn't know and weren't interested in figuring it out...

Aspirin? I think I had a slightly tougher variant.

My mom noticed the first signs, a couple of days later I was in the hospital unable to keep anything down, and within 48 hours I was too weak to sit up, with about 3 red blood cells to my name.

I made it through just fine, eventually, but it required about a week in ICU....

Dunno. I was in the hospital for something like a week. The big thing I remember is that they wanted to poke me with needles. I was on an IV for a few days and I really did not like the idea. I have no clue if I was able to eat or not, that would have been so incredibly less important to me at the time...

I remember being convinced that my parents would think that I faked up the spots on my legs with paint to avoid school for a few days.

Everything that I've read about HSP seems to say (granted I'm not a doctor, and I may be missing doctor-speak clues in the texts) that they're not really sure what causes it, it generally goes away on it's own, and the big thing is to make sure that renal failure is caught at the "impending" stage.

Admittedly, that doesn't jibe with either of our "extended stay in the hospital" treatments...
