We bought a five year old Prius in 2012, and have been very happy with it. It holds a surprising large amount (40 10 foot long 1x4s for example), get great mileage of course, and is quite fun to drive (in a geeky video game kind of way). Maintenance costs have been fairly low. Drives well in snow (though not above 3-4 inches).

Down sides: Seats aren't what I would prefer; visibility is not the best; the small 12v battery gave us some trouble this winter.
