Literary Junk Food

Have you ever had real, serious book cravings? Or does that only happen to me?

I've managed to stave off 'Gone With The Wind' for at least another few months - there's nothing wrong with having a favorite book that I come back to whenever I'm feeling the need for comfort literature, but I'd like to keep it down to once a year or so. But last week I finished the book I was reading ('Moon Called,' by... I-forget-who, a fairly forgettable but not actively bad urban fantasy) and, when I was pawing over my shelves trying to figure out what I wanted to read next, was hit by a sudden and inexplicable craving for Stephen King.

Unfortunately, I've already read all the Stephen King books that I own, and I'm in absolutely no mood to reread right now. I want new, and scary, and creepy, and I want to jump at all the surprising bits, not sigh with comfy familiarity at favorite passages.

Even more unfortunately, I have apparently already read all the good Stephen King books. Except possibly 'Cell,' and my library hasn't had that on the shelves since it came out - the wait list is still a month long. And while I'm sure it's good, I'm not sure enough to pay hardcover prices.

So now I'm grudgingly working my way through 'Desperation.' It's... not bad, at least not as bad as 'Gerald's Game.' It satisfies my need for King-style dialogue and creepiness and gore. But it feels a heck of a lot like setting out for a hearty, rich, self-indulgent chocolate fix and winding up munching on Chocodiles and Quik....

Yeah, that pretty much hits the nail on the head. :)

Now I want to go reread my Robin McKinley books. It's been forever since I've read 'Deerskin' - thank you for reminding me!

Ooh, Deerskin! That's currently on my often-reread list.

Absolutely. There are some series that have to go with me wherever I live because I frequently get Must. Read. Now. urges about them.

Most definitely. I have moments where I absolutely must re-read a certain Bujold scene, for example.
