I Can't Be The Only Person Who Does This....

Whenever I buy clothes from Goodwill, I have to check the pockets. Not because I'm afraid of finding scary bits of dirt or nasty stuff, but because there's a part of my mind that always hopes that I'm going to find an ancient gold doubloon with a secret symbol leading to a buried treasure on the back. Or a letter entrusting me with the secrets of Atlantis. Or a phoenix feather, or something like that.

I've never found anything like that yet - I think the most I've ever discovered was an old 7-11 receipt - but that hasn't ever stopped me from looking....

I do it - but mostly with Used Bookstores. I've found some really fun things too. I found a book on phrenology embedded in the back of a Western History textbook once.

I bought a backpack at the Salvation Army a couple of weeks ago, and it had a laptop wireless card hidden in one of the inside pockets. That was a nice bonus.

They wash clothes at Goodwill, though, so stuff in pockets is less likely... Books are a better place to look for random weirdness.

I have a newspaper clipping from some production of The Scottish Play in the back of my complete works of Shakespeare.

Or Toby Ziegler's business card.

I'm forever finding interesting bits of newspapers in used books (bought on the Internet and found amid the collection of this house's previous occupant). People cut them out and used them as bookmarks, I guess. They caused discolored patches on the pages they're between, but that's worth it for the fun of running across newspaper clippings from the 1950s (or whenever - I think the oldest one I've found dates back to 1938).

I check pockets, too, especially since finding a few dollars in one once. Never anyting particularly nifty, though. I generally check pockets before putting whatever it is in the wash mostly out of habit since I tend to leave things in my own pockets and need to check them before i wash any of my clothing. As far as books go, I've found some interesting receipts, but more interesting are the notes people have left in the margins or what they have underlined.

Or you could discover evidence that the previous owner was someone famous.
