Only In My Brain

Anyone can dream about totem animals. It's a standard symbol.

But it takes someone truly.... special, I guess, to dream about totem vegetables.

Noone wanted the iceberg lettuce as their totem - it's kind of the frog of the vegetable world, not as trendy and hip as the other options. I'm not sure why, though; Joe Two Spears, Broccoli Warrior doesn't sound any more prestigious. Tasty and nutritious though they may be, I'm pretty sure almost all vegetables are intrinsically uncool....

Ahh, well at least you could pass sixth grade.

Assignment: write an autobiography for a vegetable.

I'd cast my lot with Broccoli Warrior!

Better than the wild spud, known only for his sloth and his many eyes...

I'll take your veggie totems over 19th boys' school literary fiction (kept switching between reading it and living it) - eeeeurgh! I wanna be an Eggplant Shaman! (there's a filk in there I am SO not doing!)

oh oh oh, a challenge!

Take some salt in your hand
Add it to a green that's bland
Spinach or a fine, small pea
But don't you mess with broccoli.

Try eggplant for a snack
Buy some peppers by the pack
Vegetables aren't wild & free
Except the bravest brocolli.

All the veggies can agree
One deserves a jubilee
All hail the totem brocolli...

ROFLMAO!!!! Apparently there was more than one filk hiding in there! Thank you!!! That was much fun!

As long as you aren't an Eggplant Wizard - he works the villainous side.

Actually iceberg lettuce went through a period of being somewhat trendy a few years ago. Chefs who had not grown up sneering at it rediscovered its basic crunchy water nature and developed dishes to exploit it as a desirable characteristic.

Agreed, almost all... but not all.

I cite for consideration:
- Popeye's Spinach
- Corporal Carrot Ironfoundersson (Terry Pratchett, Discworld), among others with red hair who have that Vegetable moniker
- Veggie Tales
- Bugs Bunny's carrots (especially those with lotsa Iron in 'em, or otherwise made to imbue super powers)

I totally want a hot chili pepper totem! :)

For some reason

Asparagus comes to mind as a powerful totemic symbol.

Actually, there's a whole section of alternative medicine called Plant Spirit Medicine. I know a practitioner who has several totemic plants. They're not garden vegetables, granted, but I don't see why they couldn't be.

I vote for jicama or maybe brussel sprouts!

Sounds like you've been watching too many Veggie Tales episodes.

Your totem was tasty.

Better than being were-cabbage, I assure you.

I want to meet the character whose totem vegetable is the rutabaga.

[identity profile] iralith.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I have met him! In this LARP I play in, OK, there's this sort of insane berserker/farmer character who spent about half an hour thinking he was a rutabaga. I think it was something that had been at the back of his mind for a long time; I had extensive discussions with him re his fronds. It was quite late at night.

A friend of mine had a dream a few months back that she was celery.

I was running a World of Darkness RPG several years ago, and in a fit of weirdness introduced an NPC who was a were-pinetree. I wondered, y'know, if the Garou are Gaea's immune system, what would the rest of her body be -- and it seemed at the time to fit so well for her lungs.
