Help Me, Internets!

So I've been debating back and forth over this for three days, and can't make up my mind (yes, I know it's silly to be dithering so extensively over something so small and ridiculous, but this is what happens when I have spare time and mental energy), so... I put it to y'all to make up my mind for me:

Should I buy myself the black wrap dress I found at the secondhand store this weekend?

Pro: it fits
Con: it's a lot shorter than I first thought it was when I saw it on the rack

Pro: it's on sale at the secondhand store for next to nothing
Con: did I mention it's *really* short? Like, when I'm standing with my arms relaxed, my fingers come further down than the hem.

Pro: I don't have a lot of short-sleeved dresses in my wardrobe
Con: I do have a lot of black dresses already

Pro: it's versatile
Con: I'll probably never actually wear it.

Pro: just buy the damn thing already!
Con: WAAH I'm afraid!

So.... cast the deciding vote and alleviate me of any responsibility?

Edited to add: That answers that question. Took the car in for a $30 oil change and just got a call from the dealer saying that it needs over $600 of emergency services to be able to drive it home. I'm not going to be able to buy myself groceries for the next month, let alone dresses I don't need.

Damnit.

Buy it.

[identity profile] janetmiles.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Buy it. And wear it in good health! (If it's really too short for you to wear it comfortably, use it as a tunic over pants.)

[identity profile] filkertom.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Short black dress.

Your legs.

What's the problem? ;)

[identity profile] scifantasy.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It fits and it's cheap.

[identity profile] wcg.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Con: I'll probably never actually wear it.

This was my first thought. Don't buy it. Instead, get something you'd feel comfortable wearing.

[identity profile] filkerdave.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to go with this. If you're REALLY not going to wear it, let someone else have it

[identity profile] aries-walker.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Buy it. You'll look great in it.

And I just can't resist this . . .

[identity profile] dagibbs.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Con: did I mention it's *really* short?

I think that's a Pro:, not a Con:. :)

Buy! Buy! Buy! Then wear to con. :)

[identity profile] goldenoak.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Buy it! If you find in time that it's too short for comfort, you can easily find something awesome to sew along the hem to lengthen it. :)

[identity profile] zombie-dog.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say to buy it. It's inexpensive and there will be some day when you remember "a lot of people want to see me in this, and it will feel awesome to make their dreams come true!"

[identity profile] gyzki.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I say buy it - it costs next to nothing.
And then do wear it sometime.

[identity profile] helbling.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Buy it! Buy it!

[identity profile] rickvs.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
> I'll probably never actually wear it.

It's more important that you throw your money at progress towards your own comfort level than throwing it at satisfying the prurient interests of me and some other members of your audience. Unless, as janetmiles suggests, it would make a good tunic. Or perhaps a good scarf :>

[identity profile] ladymondegreen.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a fad right now for sheer ruffles along straight hems, so that would work out fabulously.

[identity profile] quietann.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I keep seeing younger women wearing very short, solid colored dresses over cute leggings. That is probably just a trend, but I suspect you'd look great in it!

[identity profile] ladysprite.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
On a completely separate note, it looks like you're going to be practically in my backyard in a couple of weeks - any chance I can steal you for lunch or somesuch while you're at PiCon?

[identity profile] pagawne.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you would look great in it, with or without leggings.

However, seems the car has made the question moot. BTDT all too often.

[identity profile] auntiemame67.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
OH MY GOD! You know this too? I love this song.... :)

Does that $600 also include repairing your AC?
I'm so sorry, hon. Doesn't it always feel like one step forward, two back?
*hug*

[identity profile] ladysprite.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Does that $600 also include repairing your AC?

Nope - that's a different car, and an estimate of close to $1000 on its own. No, these are minimal repairs necessary to keep the car drivable and safe, apparently. We can't afford anything except the bare minimum right now.

[identity profile] evcelt.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry to hear about the car. I sympathize- I just had a massive car repair bill myself.

Otherwise, I would have recommended that you buy the dress...

[identity profile] braider.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww. *hugs*

[identity profile] pixel.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
If you haven't authorized the repairs pick the car up and get a copy of their estimate. Once you two have the estimate one of you call me and I'll review it for you over the phone and let you know if it sounds at all reasonable.
I may also be able to do some/all the work for you for a hell of a lot less than the dealer.

[identity profile] pixel.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
To add, if a car seems safely drivable and isn't making any ominous noises the odds that it needs that much repair to be able to safely drive home is very small.

[identity profile] filkertom.livejournal.com 2010-08-11 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Ohhh, 100% or so, if you show up. :D

[identity profile] aries-walker.livejournal.com 2010-08-11 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I played Farley Flavors at the Lullaby of Broadway LARP last year - it was research!

[identity profile] vettecat.livejournal.com 2010-08-11 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry for the edit - we've been dealing with some of that lately too.

[identity profile] felis-sidus.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Buy it! Every woman should, at some point in her life, own a dress that's so shockingly seductive she's afraid to wear it outside her home.

You can, after all, wear it inside your home, for special occasions.

[identity profile] crash-mccormick.livejournal.com 2010-08-14 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
(a) STart car being fixed by someone.
(b) buy groceroies.
(c) buy the dress
(d) call me and we will work something out to keep you fed, mobile , and clad.
