Exploring

So part of my whole 'trying to be a sane and healthy person' involves learning to take better care of myself. Which, for me, is less about trying to eat more veggies and get more exercise, and more about getting enough sleep and time off instead of working myself to a crispy frizzle.

Part of this means not overscheduling myself with work. Things have started picking up for the summer, schedule-wise, and given that the spring was a little slow, it's hard not to just grab as many days of work as I can. But with [livejournal.com profile] umbran reliably employed again, it's a little easier to justify an extra free day here and there. So, among other things, I have seized a weekend in July and declared it to be a three-day mini-vacation for us.

We can't make the trip to Latvia that we were planning this summer, due to circumstances beyond our control. And three days isn't exactly enough to fly to Places Far Off - and even if it were, I'd like to try to keep expenses to a reasonable level. But it is enough to go somewhere moderately nearby and run away for a little while.

So - any suggestions for weekend escapes in New England? I'm new at this whole vacation thing, and not quite sure where to start....

C. and I took a long weekend together when I was in college. We went to North Conway Mass. and stayed at a little B&B called the Nestle Inn. Mostly we explored local stuff like Hancock Shaker Village. It was cheap and fun and very relaxing. The B&B had a cat and a whirlpool tub for 2 and a nice little couple running it that delighted in feeding their guests wonderful breakfasts (every morning there was coffee/tea and pre-meal muffins before the sit down meal began, I don't think we ever ate lunch).

Another idea would be Mystic, CT. It has old Mystic village, the aquarium and a delightful downtown to stroll through that would probably be just enough to be entertaining for 3 days without having to rush to see everything.

If it is the July 1st weekend, you could come to my cottage party!

We've got a state park! There are... trees. And, um, lakes? And those tall landform things, bigger than hills, the hell are they called... mountains. We've got mountains. I'm told it's all very lovely if you're into that sort of thing.

The area around Mount Washington is nice (and if you don't want to drive, you can take a train or a van to the top).

[livejournal.com profile] noire just posted about her weekend trip to the MASS MoCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art) in North Adams.

If you go anywhere near Lenox, I strongly recommend the chocolate from Chocolate Springs.

Vermont isn't too far from you, it's gorgeous, and it's remote. I say go there.

It's been forever since I've visited the Cape (I'm going to try to go back this summer), but I remember it as being a pretty cool place. Also, you can ferry over, obviating the need for what is an inexplicably long drive, given the size of Massachusetts.

Sturbridge Village is rather fun for a day if you're interested in a slightly later historical period than the SCA. (And, well, Six Flags is also out that way but you've doubtless heard of that.)

May I recommend

May I recommend <a href="http://www.marktwainhouse.org/>The Mark Twain House</a> in Hartford? Beautiful area, amazing house, and many of the guides tell great stories. Also, he and <a href="http://www.harrietbeecherstowecenter.org/>Harriet Beecher Stowe</a> were neighbors, so her home museum is nearby.
