Home Alone

When I woke up this morning I had plans for today. Honest, I did. I had to go in for a 6-hour shift at work, but after that I was supposed to head over to a friend's weekend-long house party, meet my husband there, and play wacky tabletop RPG's until the middle of the night. A long day, but a lot of fun, and in spite of some roughness in getting characters figured out, I was very much looking forward to it.

That was until I got into work.

Saturdays are always rough, but they're usually survivable. We have two doctors on, and some of the best support staff, so we can usually manage all of the last-minute emergencies and hiccups that always turn up when people have enough time to pay attention to their pets. Today.... today was just freaking absurd.

Because it's a short day, we don't get a lunch break. We're booked every 15 minutes, with one 15-minute slot open each hour for catch-up time, emergencies and callbacks. By two hours into the day, every single emergency slot was booked. By 1pm, we had even more emergencies than that, because people stopped calling and just started walking in. I wound up seeing over 20 appointments, of which approximately three were healthy and simple. If I hadn't had one appointment fail to show up, I might not have survived; as it was, I only wound up stuck in the office until a little more than an hour after closing.

By the time I got home I was dead on my feet, exhausted enough that I was having trouble focusing my eyes. Not exactly the best state to drive through Boston traffic, or to play fast-paced, wacky, intense horror games.

So instead I am home, on a chilly not-quite-summer night, with a cuddly afghan, my cats, a chicken parmesan calzone (God bless food ordering via internet), and not quite enough motivation to get up and make myself a pot of tea. Emergency Backup Social Contacts #1 and #2 have both been sounded out for hangout time, both to no avail, but... I'm kind of okay with that, too. As it is, I'm probably not the best company right now, and I'm not too upset about the thought of an evening where my hardest decision is whether to watch 'Gone With the Wind' or a Veronica Mars marathon.....

That tears it. I'm ordering a calzone.

Yeah, sometimes you just need a quiet night.

And once again you've reminded me why I try hard to never make an appointment for the cats on a Saturday. Although the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend was remarkably quiet; the staff were all wondering when the storm was going to hit. I also show up prepared for a long wait. Going to a vet, particularly a larger practice, is more akin to going to an emergency room some days. We're low priority and I'm fine with that because it means everything is ok. *knock on wood* Not like the poor lady whoss tiny dog had eaten an entire box of dark chocolate (fine at the time, thankfully).
