I love winter, but....

I've been awake for almost an hour now, and it's still mostly dark outside. Today, I suppose, this is a good thing. I'll get to watch the sun rise as I drive to work - watch it paint the sky in a splendor of colors not seen anywhere else in the grey-and-brown world around me, the rainbow warmth almost like an embrace.

Glorious as it is today, though, this means that by next week the sun won't rise until after I'm hidden in my hobbit-hole of an office. No matter how many windows that building has, light never seems to penetrate it.

Dark when I leave the house, dark when I get home. For the next three months, the sun will be wavering between a weekend visitor and a myth, until by January I start to feel like a blind cave fish, wondering if natural light was ever real at all or if it was just something I made up to keep the darkness from taking over inside of me as well as outside.

Hurry up and rise quicky, sun. I want to spend as much time with you as possible while I still can....

*sympathy*

Here in the more northern latitudes, it's already dark when I leave for work and dark when I get home. And I recently got moved from an office with a window to one without. If I didn't smoke, I'd go all day without knowing what the weather is like!

I know what you mean; I like the dawn (even if I'd rather see it before bed, not after), and I'm not looking forward to dark-to-dark commuting....
