Skateland

A few weeks ago, one of my slightly wacky coworkers suggested renting a skating rink for a night and having a sort of office party. I never thought it would work - we'd never get around to it, we wouldn't find enough people....

It did work, and I just got home. The fronts of my thighs are burning from skating in circles for the past two hours, my ankles are kind of stiff, and I've had more fun than I ever would have thought possible. I hadn't been skating in at least 13 years, since my friend EJ broke his leg at my synagogue's Youth Group Mixer, and I was afraid I would have completely forgotten anything I had possibly learned.

For the first spin around the rink, I was a little wobbly. Moving away from the wall seemed like a daring and risky move, but by the second circuit I was getting the feel of things again. By the time the smoke machine and blacklights started working, I was in utter flashback mode. The DJ was playing 'Billie Jean' and 'Come On, Eileen' and the hum of the floor under my wheels and the smell of the smoke and the rhythm of my legs all blurred together into a happy flashback experience....

I'm nowhere near as good as my coworkers who practice - I can't skate backwards, or do any flashy stunts, but I managed to stay off my backside, which is good enough for me. I'll definitely pay for this all tomorrow, when I have to stand in surgery for eight hours, but it's utterly worth it. And something tells me I'll be doing this again soon. It's too much fun to wait that long again....
