Home again, home again, jiggety-jig
Feb. 25th, 2002 11:08 pmIt's far too late and I'm far too tired to be awake, but part of me doesn't want to go to sleep quite yet - to do so would be to put a formal end to the weekend. Tomorrow morning I'll wake up with the sun, put on my mundane clothes, and go back to work again. I'll discuss safe, everyday topics with my coworkers, look and act normal, and think hard about medicine and patient welfare. I'll be in my normal life.
This weekend was a break from that, a step outside normal. Part of that was the larp - dressing up in costume and wig, becoming someone else for the purpose of the game. Being a green-haired demon who seduced Professor Snape, wandered the jungle with Tarzan, and helped fight Dorian Grey and kill Voldemort. There's a level of excitement and release that comes from being someone else for a little while.
More importantly for me, this time at least, was the chance to visit a world that I used to be part of, but had left for far too long. Before vet school, I had a circle of friends in the larping community. I saw them a few times a year, but we were important to each other, and we kept up to date on each other's lives. I missed that in the years that vet school swallowed me whole. After three years of being absent, I didn't know if I'd be able to return.
I never should have worried. The best part of the weekend for me was being welcomed back into my friends' lives with open arms. People had changed, things didn't slide back into being the same, but the friendships survived - and to me, this is even better than if things had stayed the same. I'm not the same person I was three years ago... but it looks like who-I-am-now will fit with who-they-are-now, and we can work from there.
Enough babbling, though. Time for me to sleep, so I can work my twelve-hour day tomorrow. I have enough happy memories to make it through the day smiling.
