New hobby happiness
Mar. 6th, 2002 11:43 pmSome hobbies are sought out, some are thrust upon one, and some just sort of happen accidentally when you aren't paying attention.
When I moved into this apartment many moons ago, a friend gave me a little geranium in a pot. I've never been very skilled at indoor gardening - I can manage a smallish vegetable garden, but potted plants never seem to do well in my house. Somehow, though, this tiny two-leaf cutting has managed to survive my worst neglect, my cats, being knocked off the windowsill, and generally mistreated, and has grown into an impressively huge shrub that threatens to take over my kitchen. And somewhere along the line I've gotten rather sentimentally attached to it. It's just a plant, but still...
So, now it's starting to outgrow the teeny little pot it started in. So I had to go and get it a new pot, today. Of course, that means the little pot will be empty, so I had to get some new seeds for it - white impatiens, which should complement the red geraniums quite nicely. And Home Depot just happened to be having a sale on little container-gardens, and I've been thinking about growing catnip for my kitties anyway. And on top of all this was the little italian herb garden kit I found at the Discovery Channel store... it's a good thing my kitchen has a lot of windowsill space.
So, now I'm throwing myself into the world of container gardening with wild abandon. I can already envision my little mini-jungle of flowers and spearmint and chive and oregano, and despite the little voice of reason in my head which is hollering with all it's might that I need to calm the heck down, the rest of me is cheerfully plotting for window-boxes, hanging baskets, and lovely pots of greenery to put on the porch of the apartment I hope to be moving into this summer.
I need to learn how to approach new things slowly and reasonably. Until I do, though, I'll enjoy my merry havoc quite thoroughly.
