My calves are stiff and aching, in the way that means they've been used and abused for just a little too long. My shoulders are tight from holding my arms up and my body straight. My toes are sore from carrying my weight, and my head aches just the slightest from recovering after getting dizzy from spinning around at reckless speeds.
Today was a *good* dancing day.

SCA dance is a goodness, and it's wonderful to get a weekly dose of dance - it feels good to move, and to make my body work with the music, and to practice the steps until they become part of my kinesthetic memory. And just-plain-dancing is always marvelous... no steps, no worrying about whether I'm doing things right or my foot being at the proper angle with the floor, just flailing about in whatever way seems best at the moment. But sometimes a dose of simultaneous high energy and high elegance is just what I need.

It's been years upon years since I went to a Victorian Tea Dance, and I do not intend to make that mistake again. I don't think I'll ever find anything in the world more romantic than a proper waltz - eyes locked upon your partner's, spinning around the room until you're lightheaded and counting on his arms to keep you upright, caught in the sweep of the other couples on the floor..... and polka, that horribly maligned and misrepresented dance, is even more fun - somewhere between a waltz and almost flying, feet only touching the ground long enough to push off and spin in another direction. And, frustrating as it can be on occasion, it's also exciting to be new at something, to have the fun and accomplishment that comes with learning something for the first time, and practicing, and watching the skills grow inside you.

And now it's over, and my feet still want to spin and bounce and glide. Do I really have to wait another month for the next dance?
