Mar. 31st, 2004 04:24 pmIt's not fair. If I have to pay the penalty for something, I should at least get the pleasure of having done what I'm being punished for.
Today was our monthly birthday party at work - on the last Wednesday of each month, we have a little sort of mini-party and cake for everyone who's celebrating a birthday. Despite our only having about a dozen employees, our boss tends to forget dietary restrictions, and today's cake was a lovely strawberry-filled cake with strawberry topping. Of course, my incredibly severe allergy to strawberries clashed with my incredible need for sugar and love for whipped-cream icing, and never stood a chance.
I took a piece with no strawberries. I cut out an inch on either side of the filling. I took a clean fork after dismembering my slice, and even then I only ate about half of the strawberry-free cake and icing. And, just to be safe, I dosed myself with benadryl.
So why is my chest all wheezy and my throat all tight and itchy? Oh, that would be because I'm stupid, I suppose, and need to learn that 'close enough to safe' isn't in fact close enough. I'm lucky, I guess, that I'm just uncomfortable and not blue. Still, it would have been nice, if I have to suffer, to at least have eaten one of the incredibly beautiful and no-doubt marvelous berries....
