Once Upon A Sappy Analogy
Dec. 3rd, 2004 09:28 amEveryone, I'm pretty sure, knows the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, in one vague form or another. She wanders into their house, pokes around for a little while, and has a hard time finding things that are just right for her. Ignoring the issues of breaking and entering and selfish entitlement to other people's property, it does make me wonder.
The first chair she found was too big, and that's understandable and easily recognizable. The second chair was too small - but did she notice that at first? Or did she just curl up in a tiny ball and tuck herself in, arms around her legs and chin on her knees, and congratulate herself on finding a safe little comfy spot where she could feel snug and cozy?
And once she realized that maybe it was a little on the small side, did she immediately recognize that as a problem, or did she tell herself that it couldn't be all that bad because it wasn't like the first chair, and that she could make herself comfortable by just shifting a little bit, or balancing a little differently? Or did she wonder if maybe it wasn't that the chair was too small, but that she was too big?
Somehow, finally, she does move on to the chair that's just right, but did she manage to do that before she developed a nasty crick in her neck and her legs became too stiff to straighten out easily? And once she was there, did she decide right away that it was perfect, or did she sit curled up in the middle for a little while, afraid to stretch out in case there wasn't room, and afraid to sit back in case it was too big and she couldn't reach the floor?
In a strange way, I kind of hope so. It would make me feel a lot better about where I am right now....
