I love this time of the year. Tuesday morning I walked through my garden on the way to work. A couple of the zucchini plants had tiny little fingernail-sized zukelets on them, the greenbeans were starting to flower, and I figured from the handful of tiny green babies on the tomato plants that I really should start thinking about caging them soon. Nothing ready yet, but there was the definite promise of fresh veggies in the near future.

Last night, as I headed out to run errands, I decided to take another quick walk through. I wound up having to go back to the house to drop off the armfuls of zucchini and yellow squash I had picked. This afternoon I wound up bringing in almost a half gallon of green beans, another two squash, and the first cucumber of the season. Tomorrow will probably bring another haul of green beans and more cucumbers. The tomato plants have collapsed under the weight of their offspring, meaning that caging them will be at least a two person job taking half of tomorrow morning, the eggplants are covered in flowers, and even the bell peppers are starting to produce.

By this time next month we'll be desperately trying to give away tomatoes and wondering why we always plant so much. But tonight I'll be eating the first produce of the year from my very own garden, and tomorrow I'll make green bean and mushroom pie if it's not too hot, and zucchini bread, and in a week or so I'll finally have decent tomatoes for the first time in almost a year....
