While my career is fabulous and fulfilling, I realize now that veterinary medicine may not be the best life-path for a pale person who bruises easily. I'm sturdy, and I heal well, and I keep on keeping on in spite of whatever happens, but in the meantime I spend a decent portion of my time looking like the poster girl for a battered womens' shelter.

On the other hand, at least I have interesting stories to go along with most of my injuries. Other people, for the most part, get injured in boring ways. They run to answer the phone and fall down the stairs and twist their ankle, or they cut their finger slicing bagels, or they slide on an icy driveway walking to their car in high heels and break their wrist.

Me? I've got a nice bruise on my right knee right now. I banged it into a client's bumper jumping out of the bed of his pickup truck after taping the body of my last patient into a nice neat blanket-wrapped bundle so it wouldn't unwrap while he drove down the highway. We couldn't lower the tailgate-thingy to climb out; the body was leaning against it. So I had to jump over the late patient and the edge of the truck, and there happened to be a bumper halfway between me and the ground.

On the other hand, at least the client was able to get what he needed, and I am spared the ignominy of simple, everyday injuries.

Until the next time I cut my hand slicing bagels.
