My Husband, My Hero
Feb. 26th, 2007 08:56 pmI'm sure almost everyone has one particular movie that defines their childhood - that they watched over and over, that they fell in love with, that probably shaped their interests in a subtle or not-so-subtle way. For me, that movie was 'The Last Unicorn.'
My parents had a couple whom they were friends with, and we'd go to their house to visit on a semi-regular basis. They didn't have children, which left me with very little to do while the grownups socialized, but I wasn't allowed to bring books, because it was rude to read when you were being social. And the only age-appropriate movie that my parents' friends had was 'The Last Unicorn' - so I would be plunked down in front of the TV and they'd start the movie, and I'd watch it, rewind it, and watch it again until it was time to go home. Not only did I never get tired of it, I desperately looked forward to the visits, because it was the only time I got to see it.
When I was a little older, I read the book, and most of the rest of Peter Beagle's work, and I love it all, but the movie still holds more magic for me than I can put into words. I hunted for years to find the soundtrack; I eventually got my own copy on videotape, which I most horribly lost at some point during my travels between Ohio and Massachusetts, and I can probably still recite large sections of it. And I learned that Mr. Beagle was never paid for his work on the screenplay, and lamented that there was nothing I could do to help.
This Valentine's Day, my sweetheart informed me rather sadly that my present hadn't arrived yet. I didn't mind, since 1) my love for him isn't contingent on goodies, 2) late presents just extend the celebration, and 3) he thoughtfully provided me with a placeholder prize of a box of Ghirardelli chocolates. However, like the Elephant's Child, I am filled with a 'satiable curiosity, and as the days went by with no package, I nearly tore myself apart wondering what I was waiting for.
Said gift arrived late last week, and.... I am now the proud and elated owner of a copy of the 25th Anniversary Special Edition DVD of 'The Last Unicorn.'
Autographed by Peter Beagle.
Personalized, to me, with a special note.
And the proceeds from this apparently all went to Mr. Beagle himself.
It's shiny, and it has my name on it, from one of my favoritest authors ever, and it's full of the story I fell in love with when I was eight, and it is quite possibly the most perfect gift I have ever been given.
I have the best husband in the world.
