When I was listing the benefits of traveling around doing relief work, I forgot one of my favorites - working in a different area every few days means that I get to discover all sorts of new and different little local eateries. As much as I try to be good and take my lunch to work every day, it's usually not *too* hard for the staff to wheedle and cajole me into ordering out with them. This has led to me having a strangely fascinating set of food habits associated with different clinics - there's one place near Dracut that makes excellent Chicken Caesar Salad wraps, another slightly west of the middle of nowhere that has bread salad to die for, and so on.

Alas for my diet but happily for me, the clinic I'm working at this week happens to be across the street from one of the best Italian bakeries I've ever found in this state. Half of the staff don't speak English, and it's tiny enough that you wind up developing a close personal relationship with any other customers that happen to be in there, but it is utterly and totally worth squirming in there and making yourself understood.

I'm a huge sucker for bakeries in general, especially ones with display cases full of adorable tiny cakes and great big gooey cookies and rainbow-colored Italian holiday cookies. So, even though I only went in to grab a sandwich on Monday (it being way too dammn hot out to eat the nasty pre-packaged instant soup I had brought), I wound up dilly-dallying way too long over the sugary treats and coming home with a pair of apple turnovers that were just too gorgeous to pass up.

Dear sweet candy-coated gods of butter and baked goods, I thought it was the most wonderful piece of pastry I had ever tasted. At least, until I was suckered into going back there yesterday and trying their raspberry turnovers. There's a tiny part of my soul that's yammering out in guilt and frustration that I'm not baking these things myself, but the rest of me is too busy licking my fingers and rolling around in dessert glee to listen. It's probably a very, very good thing that this place is an hour from my house, for the sake of my continued good health.

Meanwhile, I need to start finding out what the local hidden food treasures are around my job-to-be - there's got to be something good lurking around there....
