My sweetie and I woke up this morning, with plans to make breakfast and then spend the day working on House Stuff - building bookshelves, unpacking the library, organizing the office, and generally making this look like a place where people live. There was just that stumbling block of breakfast, first.

So we headed down to the kitchen, and started looking around for ideas. It's a weekend and we didn't have a set schedule, so we try to make something a little different than quickie workday sustenance.

"Pancakes?" My husband asked.
"No buttermilk."
"Applesauce bread?"
"We just made that a week or two ago, and the applesauce is all frozen."
"Popovers?"
"We don't have enough eggs - the bar cookies last night used all but four."
"How about this recipe for oven pancakes - it doesn't need buttermilk..."
"No, but it does call for half-and-half, and all we have is 1% milk."
"French toast?"
"Not with potato-scallion bread, which is what we have right now."
"Coffee cake?"
"Takes 2 hours to make, and I need to take some Advil damn soon, or my head will fall off. Also, I think we used up the cinnamon last night."
"Okay. Plain old muffins."
"Sure. But who's going to wash the dishes? All the bowls and measuring cups are still dirty from baking last night. It's been an hour since we woke up; by the time we're done it'll be lunchtime. And did I mention I need to take some pain meds?"

Fine. So we decided to give up on baking, and just have cold cereal for breakfast. And that was when we found out that all of our cereal was either stale or down to crumbs in the bottom of the box. I think that was the point where I sat down on the kitchen floor and tried to decide whether to laugh or cry. Thankfully, my sweetheart convinced me that breakfast at home was Just Not Meant To Be, and that maybe we should wander into Medford Square and see what we could find.

So we got dressed. And we went outside. And.... it was glorious outside. Cool, and sunny, and the streets were empty. Traffic lights changed as we walked up to them with alarming frequency. I think, if I had looked up at the sky, I would have actually seen an arrow in the clouds pointing our way to the Italian pastry shop that we had been meaning to check out for the past year, but had never gotten around to.

The pastry shop was open. Their staff was friendly. It smelled like heaven. And five minutes and four dollars later, we had a pair of the most delicious apple turnovers I've ever tasted, and chocolate cupcakes for dessert later tonight.

I try to avoid eating out when I can, and I like baking for myself whenever I can. But sometimes the universe sends you a message that something is supposed to happen, and it's much easier not to fight it....
