"Mrs. Fields Best Cookie Book Ever," by Debbi Fields

This is another favorite. I've had the cookbook for a long damn time - I think my mom gave it to me when I was in college, when she learned that I could barter homemade baked goods for almost anything. I've used it almost to death. The spine is split, most of the inside pages are falling out, and there are smudges and stains on the pages I use most often. I love it. And when a friend invited me over to help her break in the oven in her new apartment, I figured it would be my best go-to resource.

To be specific, the book includes a recipe for Butterscotch Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars, which are, essentially, an extra-thick, extra-rich chocolate chip bar cookie made with dark brown sugar. This is the recipe I fall back on when I don't know what else to make, when I need a quick thank-you gift, or when I'm having a crummy day and need to cheer myself up with the mystical alchemy of sugar, butter, and chocolate.

We made them together, playing around a little bit with the flavors. They were good. I'll probably make them again, but that's no big surprise.... the true fun here was cooking with someone other than [livejournal.com profile] umbran for the first time in not-quite-forever, which was both odd and delightful, and is something that I ought to do more often.
