"Better Homes and Gardens Jiffy Cooking"

And so begins the section of Scary Old Cookbooks. I have a bunch of these that I swiped from my mom because she was getting ready to throw them away, now that she's only cooking for one or two people. Even though they're creepy and full of recipes that involve aspic or canned chicken a la king, I can't tolerate the thought of throwing away books.

This one isn't the scariest. It is, however, very clearly a product of its times (published in 1967). Everything involves either jelly molds or canned products that I find deeply disturbing - I'll admit that this wasn't the first time I tried to use this book, and I've put it back more than once on the grounds that I hadn't yet found a recipe I was willing to try. This time, though, I managed to find the Sandwiches section, and decided that Chef Salad In A Roll sounded benign enough.

It was a good sandwich. I disagree with their statement that four slices of ham, four slices of salami, and four slices of American Cheese will make four dinner-sized sandwiches, but maybe that's just a product of our gluttonous generation. Or maybe they sliced things differently in 1967. I don't know. Either way, this is checked off the list forever and can go to the Museum shelf in my library.

And back to the glossy checkout lane booklets. I've got a handful of these on the 'summer recipes' theme, so I need to knock them off the list while the weather is decent. This one, I think, is another in the list of hand-me-downs from [livejournal.com profile] umbran's mother. I don't know if I've ever even looked through it before, let alone used it.

But the weather was cooperative last week, and so we decided to break out the grill. I love grilling, it's a chance for some serious cooperative cooking. I'm a firm believer that the grill itself is Man Food Work, but I love the chance to play sous-chef instead of primary cook, and putter around inside the kitchen getting stuff ready while he makes delicious food smells outside. And the recipe for Honey Mustard Glazed Kielbasa Kabobs really did sound like it would be worth trying.

I know it sounds a good bit like white trash cuisine, but they were delicious. They'll be even better when we can make them with zucchini and yellow squash from our garden, but in general, for a quick throw-it-on-the-grill dinner, they were a total success.

Now, please let the weather stay nice until I manage to find the time to start the ice cream maker running....
