Ink Advice

So after years of thinking, contemplating, considering, stalling, speculating, and test runs involving henna and Sharpie, I have finally decided to go ahead and get the tattoo that I've wanted for... well, years. (Fox pawprints walking down my back, for those who haven't been privy to said test runs.) The thing is, I know absolutely nothing about getting a tattoo, other than the fact that it'll involve trusting some stranger enough to stab needles full of permanent ink into me.

However, I also know that many of my faithful readers have significant knowledge and experience in this department. So I ask you, friends and family, to share your wisdom and advice with me.

Locals - any recommendations on who I might ask to stab me full of dye? It doesn't need to be in the Medford/Boston area; I'd rather drive an hour for a good experience than have a mediocre job done a mile from home.

Non-locals - what do I look for to know a good tattoo parlor/artist? What should I expect from the experience itself? What's the etiquette of communicating what I want? I have a *very* clear idea of what I want this to look like, to the point of having pictures of one of the test runs to show whoever winds up doing it, and while I'm open to a little variation, I'd rather not have someone try to talk me into something radically different - is this acceptable, or is that being too pushy/bossy, since I'm the one here with no knowledge or experience?

This is the first birthday/Generic Winter Holiday present I will have given myself in years, and it's something I'll have on me forever - I want to do it right.....
