The new and improved New England Aquarium truly is spectacular.

I haven't been to the aquarium for a couple of years, mostly because I got rather frustrated when they got rid of my favorite exhibit (the dark room of Fishes Of The Deepy Darkness, or whatever they called it) to put in a shark-petting tank, but I had heard from coworkers who volunteer there that the recent renovations were impressive. So when the heat broke yesterday and [livejournal.com profile] umbran and I were looking for a fun way to kill a weekend day, we decided to go walking around Boston and ended up at the aquarium.

And it's awesome. There are heaps of new species in the central tank, and a bunch of new exhibits (though I still miss my Dark Fishes of Doom). And the octopus was putting on a rather impressive show, and there was this adorable little wobbly-walking cutesy fish that looked like a cross between a clownfish and a hermit crab... and there was a hammerhead in the big tank.

I love hammerhead sharks. They are the best sharks ever, mostly because.... well, because they look like big old dorks with hammer-shaped heads.

I have a problem with sharks in general, and that problem is this: sharks are, ultimately, kind of dweebs. Their noses are funny, and they have this glassy expression and no social skills, and I just can't get past the fact that, deep down inside, they're nerds masquerading as cool kids. Sharks are nerds. But because they're murdernerds instead of computer nerds or math nerds or gaming nerds, they can kind of pass, and everyone thinks they're cool.

Hammerheads don't do that. They don't try to pass, they don't pretend they're cool, they don't hide their true selves for the sake of eating lunch with the popular kids. They embrace their nerditude. They have pride in who they are, and in their extremely-funny-shaped heads, and they own their geek nature.

So. Hammerheads make any aquarium better. Also, we got to see two seals get in a slap-fight, and there was an anaconda as big around as my waist, and jellyfish with track lighting.

What more can you ask for out of a surprise-free-day?
