2005. Almost all done, already, and I had just started getting used to it. It doesn't feel like a whole year - I've always known that as you get older time goes faster, but I wasn't quite ready for it to run this quickly yet.

Anyway....

I've learned that sometimes losing a job can be a blessing in disguise.
I've learned that friends are an incredibly valuable resource.
I've learned what it means to be self-employed, and that it can be a wonderful experience.
I've learned how to file quarterly taxes.
I've learned that, no matter how many times you have Pennsic described to you, it can't prepare you for the real thing.
I've learned that Pennsic is a lot more fun than I had ever expected it to be.
I've learned how to wrap a sari, and sew a choli.
I've learned the barest beginner basics of Indian dance, and learned that it's even more fun than it looks.
I've learned how to teach dance, and that I'm better at it than I thought I would be.
I've learned that earning the respect and recognition of my friends feels amazingly good.
I've learned how to perform an enucleation.
I've learned what it means to be a Baronial champion.
I've learned what the SCA is like outside my own barony.
I've learned that being cast opposite total strangers in a LARP can be a chance to find new friends you weren't looking for.
I've learned that, as much as I learn about period dance, there will always be more dances that I don't know.
I've learned that pickling cucumbers don't grow well in our soil.
I've learned that my country is just as vulnerable to disaster as anywhere else, maybe more than some.
I've learned that, even after having been through something like it before, it still hurts like hell to have useful skills but not be able to get out and do something with them in that disaster.
I've learned that, if there is a next time, I'm going to do everything I can to find a way to get there and get my hands dirty helping.
I've learned how to hold and help care for a newborn baby.

Hmm. Looking at it, it seems that most of what I've learned this year is that, if I set out to do something, odds are that I can do it, and pretty well. I really ought to remember that.

I guess 2005 wasn't near as bad as I was afraid it was going to be, given how it started. Let's just hope the same is true for 2006. I'm looking forward to finding out.....
