My Report Card for 'Cloverfield':

Concept: A
Acting: A
Giant Monster: A+
Apocalyptitude: A-
Cinematography: D

I loved it, don't get me wrong. It was full of giant monster apocalyptic goodness like a twinkie is full of disturbing white sugary cream, and I knew going into it that there was a 75% chance of severe motion sickness. And it wouldn't really have worked with a more traditional means of filming - the shaky hand-held camera is a lot of what makes the movie so wonderful.

However, I have to wonder if less obsessive fans of the genre than I would find the experience, and the story, worth the several lasting hours of nausea. And they're working on a sequel; I can only pray that they figure out a new format for that - while I'm willing to put up with the post-movie illness to see it once, I don't think I can tolerate it a second time.

(Still, it was pretty damn awesome. And I'd love to speculate on what the hell was going on with anyone else who has seen it....)

We saw it and enjoyed it but don't consider it a good movie. It was a cool experience and I think a nice one to round out the monster genre. But while a neat experiment, it wasn't really a movie.

I admit it helps that I have an iron stomach. :)

Caught the midnight show on Saturday. Much enjoyment!!! Also fortunate not to get motion sick. The monster reminds me of something, and I can't remember the correct name of it; dune strider, maybe. Something out of Dark Crystal or similar movie. Anyway. We were speculating afterwards on what they might do for a sequel (not knowing at the time that one was already in the works). Look forward to discussing more!!!

Science: C-

They scored that high largely by following your sage advice of "Don't try to explain" about any of the wacky monster stuff. OTOH, the depicted physical capabilities of allegedly ordinary human beings was ludicrously out of line.

According to the filmmakers, that was a baby monster with parasites that dropped off to go eat people.

(I haven't seen the film; I like my food too much.)

I haven't seen the film (and don't really intend to - motion issues aside, the application of the slasher-film ethos to a daikaiju film is clever, but not my cup of tea); I just feel strangely vindicated that, after the original "I'm J.J. Abrams, see how precious I am?" teaser trailer came out, I correctly identified the movie being coyly hinted at as The Blair Godzilla Project. :)
