As for the cookbooks - sometimes you can find the best stuff in the oddest cookbooks. I have one by Amy Vanderbilt - the etiquette expert from the 50s and 60s, with line drawings by Andrew Warhol (yes, that Andrew Warhol) and it actually has some good recipes in it, along with the mayonnaise and chili sauce enchilada horrors.
