When she and her cousins found out that they were Scions, the scion powers were explained to them by what I can best describe as extradimensional beings who didn't have much understanding of humanity, the world, or the English language - the scions had the ability to essentially exorcise demons, sometimes by taking them into themselves, but the explanation was long, unclear, and full of metaphors about filtering the evil out of the world through the power of our bloodline and containing that evil within themselves.
In an effort to sum this up for a cousin who wasn't there at the start of the explanation, I just told him that we were all, functionally, coffee filters for Jesus. The nickname stuck, much to my delight.
