Okay. I'll admit that Contemporary/Lyrical is not my favorite dance style, so I may be coming into this a bit biased. That said....

Some lyrical routines are beautiful. I accept that. But do they all need to be turgid and depressing and serious and A Story About Something Tragic? We have dances about breast cancer, and dances about dead fathers, and dances about addiction, and tragedy, and loss, and people rolling around on the floor flailing their misery to the four corners of the earth and making us cry....

Is there a law against happy lyrical dance?

Just once - ONCE - I want to see a lyrical routine about a puppy and a kitten playing outside in the sunshine. Or about two siblings in a healthy, functional family, dancing about how awesome life is. Or just about anything positive and upbeat.

Please?

I've got tonight's episode on "tape", and haven't yet watched it, but so far I've been liking Lauren and (though he won't last long) Robert. Billy annoyed me at first, but I'm impressed by his amazing control, such as the poses he held in the African dance he did with Jose last week. Jose, by the way, bugs me, but not nearly as much as (shudder) Kent. I don't care how good a dancer he is; he's terribly irritating. AdeChike is good, but not stellar, I don't think. That leaves Ashley, who's good enough I suppose, but I can't get past her big head and distractingly boyish, clothespin-shaped physique.

There you go, my opinions on The Season So Far.

People tend to consider tragedy to hold greater inherent meaning than more lighthearted material; likewise, sad themes automatically evoke pity and/or sympathy. Both are advantageous in a competition. It's really just a case of the most efficient means of emotionally manipulating both the crowd and the judges.

Not exactly frolicking bunnies, but there's this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRWdIwCGjbE) one from season 3 with Hok and Jamie that was both really, really good and not at all sad.
