*chuckle* just re-read Deep Wizardry. Trying to work my way back through all of Duane's Young Wizard series, actually, and Hear!Hear! for Tamora Pierce!!! :D I haven't read much YA outside the group of authors already mentioned (though I picked up one recently that I want to get book 1 of the series before I start - Alma Alexander's WorldWeaver series) so I also haven't really encountered this. One YA author I re-discovered a couple years ago was Lloyd Alexander, but he seems to have never fallen into the trap of making his villains teens; his young heroes fight all manner of epic Evil (including my first encounter with horcruxes before JK made them famous), but it's always grown up/ancient/supernatural Evil.
