Getting Better

First things first - thank you so much to everyone for your sympathy, compassion, and well-wishes for Moxie. It means a lot to me to know that there are so many people who care about her, and are rooting for her. Alas, I can't pursue any sort of action against the tech who was taking care of her; there's no law against doing a lousy job of taking care of a kitten; the most I can do is make sure I don't put any patient of mine or pet of mine in her care again.

Now, the better news. Miss Mox herself is doing remarkably well. Better than I would have thought possible. Friday night it was a little bit touch-and-go; she was weak and disoriented and having trouble with food. But she took a bottle again without any problems, and by the next morning she was looking better.

She ate more over the weekend than I would have thought possible for such a tiny animal, and we gave her a serious bath to get some of the staining and junk off her fur. And she ate, and she ate, and she ate. By Sunday morning, she was almost back to herself.

She's still emaciated, but she's starting to get a little bit of a full-belly instead of a hollow belly. And if she can't run laps around the sofa for a half hour straight, she's at least running, and playing, and trying to jump over my sneakers.

And hey, she used the litterbox for the first time today. It may just be random chance, but it's a start.

In one sense, I'm almost angry at this - it proves that it *was* just starvation that was causing her signs, and not some degenerative neurological condition like the other hospital was claiming. Which... yay, for getting better, but boo for confirming that my baby was nearly killed by negligence.

End result, though, happy healing kitten, and that's all I can ask for.

Y'all put out some powerful mojo when you try, you know that?

I'm so glad to hear it.

I'm glad to hear that the little one is doing even better (and potentially even doing her business where she's supposed to!)

I'm very glad to hear it.Personally, I think I'd have to consider whether I wanted my good name associated with a clinic that provided such poor care, and telling the clinic owners and managers so.

[identity profile] ladysprite.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Just to clarify, the clinic was not responsible for her care, and did not provide her care. An employee of the clinic was, but she was not doing so in her role as an employee - it was on her own time, and at her own discretion.

The hospital itself is excellent, and I wouldn't work there if it wasn't.

That's very good to hear. :)

If she fosters kittens regularly, though, through an organization that is not the clinic, it might be worth considering passing the word on.

I know that if any of the fosters I get via the MSPCA don't show growth or improvement (and I haven't come in asap to take care of an issue as quickly as I noticed it), they would stop me from fostering immediately. And they should. Out of the 20ish kittens I've had come through my house, one died. From a horrific accident. All of the others, regardless of the condition they came in, ended up thriving.

I can understand not wanting to say something if she fosters for the clinic, but regardless of whether or not she was acting as an employee, she had the care of itty-bitty needy babies in her control and she did not act in their best interests.

That is so much better!

Oh, excellent news. (I'd been wondering.)

Glad to hear she's doing better. Keep eating kitty! :)

Yay!!!!!!

Very good! She's a lucky kitten to have found you!

Go team kitty!

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! S- and I were worrying about her over dinner; so glad to hear she's doing better! (And when she's all well, you should take her to work one day and show her off!)

I'm really glad to hear Moxie is doing much better.

Thanks for the update.

[identity profile] gra-is-stor.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yay! I'm glad she's making a comeback, and she even used her litterbox once, that's excellent.

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] vettecat - when she's better, you should take her to work and show her off. :)

It sounds like you just took care of The Very Hungry Kittenpillar. :) And that all that attention is really paying off. Thank you for showing such care, yourself. We live with so many people who would have just shrugged it off in the name of Darwinism.

So glad Moxie is doing better, and hoping for continued improvement!

Good to hear that Moxie is improving!

Yaaay! I'd be tempted to take some video and show it to the *expletive deleted* who said it was a neurological issue...and I'd certainly be making sure that everyone knew what she did to Moxie.

[identity profile] starcat-jewel.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
IAWTC. Take video, and show it to anyone and everyone who told you that it was a neurological condition and/or implied that you were "in denial" about it.

And yes, let the organization for which this tech does fostering know that she shouldn't be given any special-needs kittens. She may be perfectly competent to take care of normal orphans, but clearly not a baby like Moxie.

[identity profile] mamatiger.livejournal.com 2011-09-02 12:55 pm (UTC)(link)
IalsoAWTC. In a month or so (when she's even bigger and stronger), take Moxie to the hospital where that tech works and say, in a studied, off-hand, casual way, "oh hey, see my baby now? It's a miracle I guess, getting over that nasty degenerative neurological condition! And blindness!" *innocent blinking*

Yeah. DO IT, DO IT! :)

[identity profile] browngirl.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You named her well, and I'm glad she has you. I continue to cheer you both on!

[identity profile] medeaschild.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Moxiecat is again demonstrating that she's a tough girl, and you are the best caretaker she could ask for.

When she can clear your shoes, I may bring mine over and give her a bigger challenge.

[identity profile] ladysprite.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
She actually jumped all the way up onto the first stair this morning!

Of course, she had no idea of what to do when she got there, and just sat there looking confused and lost... but it's a milestone. :)

[identity profile] medeaschild.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
But... it didn't come down again on the other side! It was just ... high. What's a kitten to do?

Topography is hard. Let's eat tuna.
