i was lucky? i guess in that i got to the Vatican in my young and rather fervently agnostic days... in i think March? april maybe? it was cold, dreary, and blessedly uncrowded.
of course i had no tour guide.... and a lot of the city had "scaffolding disease" but i would have FREAKED at the crowds you discuss.
