Get a car, drive the coast. If you are ok with driving along curvy cliffside roads. North or south, either way, it is beautiful.
If you are wanting redwood trees, skip the overcrowded Muir, and continue your coastal drive down to Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. There is a bonus steam train ride between the adjacent Roaring Camp and the beach boardwalk in Santa Cruz.
