Ye gods, I'm so glad Umbran recognized Bad when he saw it and convinced you to go to the ER! I'm even gladder that they remembered that sometimes low-tech diagnostic tests are the best.
Prednisone does, indeed, suck, but as you know it also helps with lung issues better than anything else out there. May it work quickly so you're back to healthy quickly.
