Arisia Delight
Jan. 14th, 2007 08:57 pmI'll be honest - I expected Arisia to be crummy this year. I didn't get onto enough panels to comp my membership, the con had moved to a new hotel in an inconvenient location, at least a few people I had hoped to see weren't planning on being there, and the level of disoganization evident on the mailing lists and web page beforehand were disheartening at best, and mind-boggling at some points.
I had an amazing weekend. This was, somehow, one of the best times I've had at Arisia in a long time.
I don't know exactly why. I didn't do a lot of shopping, and I only wound up with a passing glance at the art show (though I did see my friends' gorgeous entries, and some lovely chainmail decorations). The only panel I made it to was the one I was scheduled on. I missed the masquerade completely. The con suite was not well structured for loitering and socializing, and I spent most of my free time volunteering at the staff den.
But it all wound up being fun. Helping out in the staff den happened to suit me just fine - it means I get to go to a con, and still feed people and feel useful. And while I missed a few friends, I managed to actually have good, extended one-on-one social time with other people that I don't get to see near often enough. The panel I was on, about modern plagues, had a truly fascinating blend of people and backgrounds, and brought up some interesting ideas.
And.... did I mention there was dancing? Awesome DJ, excellent music, and a handful of dance partners that rocked my world, including an extended contact improv session that finagled some balances and holds I hadn't known I was capable of. I am pleasantly achy today, and I have a handful of memories that'll keep me good company until my next intensive dancing night. Which, of course, is probably far too far away.
I also have nearly a gallon of BPAL oils, in tiny 1-ml vials, at least some of which I'll hopefully be able to swap for even more fun collectible sniffables, a few new friends, and a lot of ideas about how to keep the con this much fun for me in the future.
I'm tired, stiff, a little lonely at having to leave, but.... all in all, even with other bad news that hit this weekend, I'm feeling pretty darn good.
