Happiness, Day 3
Dec. 15th, 2008 08:55 pmLet's see - what made me happiest today?
Honestly, it's a toss-up. I got some of the loveliest birthday wishes from friends - in spite of having celebrated yesterday, people still went out of their way to send me wishes and say kind things, and on a day that was slightly stressy on the work front, that made a big difference.
But I'm going to have to be honest and say that the most happy-making thing today was going to the Toys For Tots drop-off and giving them the teddy bear I made.
I have a serious Build-A-Bear habit. Ever since I discovered the store, I have been unable to keep myself from going back, and picking out sad little animal shells and stuffing them and doing the dorktastic little dance with the satin hearts that the staff make you do and dressing them up in terminally cute little costumes. However, I also have a finite amount of space in my house, and a limited number of friends and family that I can gift with stuffed animals.
So for the past several years, one of my holiday traditions has been going to the Build-A-Bear store, making a stuffed animal, dressing it up, and donating it to Toys For Tots. It's a win-win situation - I get the fun of playing in the store, and my house doesn't get cluttered any worse than it already is. This year's bear was dressed with the assistance of a random seven-year-old I found in the store, who advised me most graciously on what outfit looked cutest, and has been waiting in my living room for the past three or four days until I found the time to deliver it.
I love going to the drop-off center. I love the smiles that I get from the Marines working there, I love looking at all of the other toys waiting to go to new homes, and I love the idea that the bear I made will be going to a kid who will, hopefully, love it to pieces. We have other holiday traditions - cookie baking, picking out the tree, visiting friends - but this one, I think, is my favorite.
