I Don't Suppose You'd Know.....

So I was digging through my closet recently, trying to figure out something to wear to go dancing in the near future, and I realized that I haven't bought myself any new dress-up and showoff clothes since.... well, since I moved back to Boston four years ago. This is a situation that needs fixing immediately.

This afternoon I wandered down to Harvard Square to raid one of the known gothy-themed stores there, only to find that they now sell vintage-style 1980's T-shirts, torn jeans, and baggy pajama pants. No leather pants, no minidresses, no halter tops, no nothing actually worth buying. And no other stores that I could find in the area that had anything useful, either.

So - Boston-area people, do you have any suggestions as to where I can go to find vaguely gothy, vaguely sexy dress-up clothes? I'm not willing to buy stuff online, since I'm kind of picky about how they fit, but I am willing to drive if there's a decent store a bit out of the way....

I don't know what kind of clothes the Garment District sells - if they have this sort of stuff, I'd love to go there.

I don't know of any Hot Topics in MA; if you've found one, please let me know. And I won't order clothes off the internet; they never fit right and I always wind up having to send them back.

Still, Garment District might work. And I know you were thinking about going - care to make a trip together?

The Garment District is across the street from my office. If you were going during a lunchtime, I might join you.

tpau, below, is slightly conflating 2 stores in the same building, which both sell used clothes. Upstairs is Garment District, which is actually organized by clothing type and can be cheap, cheap (I found a Pierre Cardin tuxedo jacket for $15, but it was much too big for me). Downstairs is Dollar-A-Pound, which sells clothing by weight (I think it's actually $1.50/lb. these days).

I'd be up for a run to Garment District next weekend... I keep meaning to scrounge for costuming ideas for Burlesque stuff. I didn't remember it being "gothy", but more on the line of wierd/fun/creative/urban.

Other thoughts:
- Hubba hubba - good but expensive, extra bonus that Teddy's Shoes is down the street, good for serious dance and generally slutty shoes - Central Square, Cambridge.
- Urban Outfitters - Harvard Square - not goth, more trendy, but I find a lot of great peices there. Nothing I could wear to a Strictly Goth occasion, but good for parties, and non-goth dancing
- Newbury Street - The Closet Upstairs may have closed, but there's GOT to be something that works.
- Hot Topic - already discussed.

I admit - I don't do a ton of clothes shopping - I have too much already, so I only buy if I happen across something I can't live without. :)

Hmm. My only plans for the coming weekend are cooking for and going to the Greenwood Isle picnic, so I'm definitely up for a shopping outing.

Care to plan something either for Saturday after the picnic, or Sunday during the day? And Anna (or anyone else, for that matter), would you want to come along?

"There is a rather large Hot Topic in the Natick Mall. In fact since Halloween is coming there is even gothy stuff there.

There is also Bedlam down in Providence. Small shop but a fair selection, decent prices and an owner who knows goth clothes, and knows fabrics & quality. I have always found him very helpful and friendly.
If we can manage to co-ordiante it I'd be glad to go down there with you."

You should do very well at Garment District, because you're skinny. If you know coraline or klingonlandlady, ask them for tips on shopping there; it can be kind of overwhelming from what I hear.

(I don't go there because used clothing places, in my experience, carry nothing for the short and fat.)

What sort of fabrics are you looking for? I often find random goth items hidden behind the ghetto-fab at Tello's, but beware the polyester blends. Their stuff is definitely made for clubbing and, uh, displaying your assets.
