It just occurred to me that it has been quite a little while since I've subjected you all to an update on my knee. Since I actually have information and progress, and since for some odd reason many of you seem to actually, y'know, care about me, I should probably let you know how I'm doing.

Much to my orthopedist's surprise, I apparently do not have a torn meniscus, or a torn anything else. What I do have is an abnormal band of tissue inside the joint, that seems to be putting tension on things in an inappropriate direction. So the question of whether I'll need surgery or not has not so much been answered as postponed - the doctor is hopeful that, given yet more time, things will heal on their own, but isn't certain. I'm under orders to wait another month, then see how I feel.

I pestered the doc until he gave me a referral for physical therapy, in spite of his insistance that it's not likely to help. Unfortunately, I tend to agree with him. Not because I doubt the power of physical therapy, but because the therapist he referred me to is only open during days and hours that I'm already scheduled to work. This is going to make it rather difficult for me to be.... therapized? Therapeuted? Anyway, it'll be a challenge.

On a more positive note, I am starting to feel better. I can walk without my cane, I can bend my knee at least 90 degrees, and I've drastically cut back my Advil intake. And according to the doctor, there's no need for me to restrict my activity at all. On the other hand, doctors don't always know best - following his opinion, I've spent the past three days walking up hill and down dale, renewing my relationship with my exercise bike, and bouncing around on my DDR pad like a maniac. The practical result of this is, of course, the fact that I'm now back to using my cane and chewing Advil like candy. Hopefully, though, this is just a mild setback, and as long as I'm careful about introducing new activity, I'll start getting better again.

I hope. Because I'm really quite tired of this....

One word, friend: moderation. I know. If only.

Please, do be careful... it's *very* easy to get overzealous when recovering from knee injuries, as I know all too well. If you're anxious to get in more physical activity, remember that even the tiniest twinge that you make your knee worse costs you much, much more exercise over the long term than you gained by not being more careful.

(At least, thinking in those terms is the ony thing that works for me.)

Not to discourage you, or anythiing, but I have a freind who just turned 21 and has completely destroyed her knees from too much DDR. So... be careful with that.

Mmm, seems to me that moderation is called for whenever one re-introduces asking for more movement/effort from a body that's needed to rest. Perhaps you just overdid it a bit there with the walking & cycling & not restricting yourself. One needs to train to run a marathon, after all.

Still - fingers crossed here that things will heal properly without surgery. *hug*

Tortured.

In my experience, the correct word is tortured. :)

I'm glad it's not a torn miniscus. As you might have gotten from my previous reply, a torn miniscus is no fun at all.

That said...take care of yourself. Don't overdo things, and more particularly, try to pay attention to "bad pain" and stop doing whatever's making it hurt. Yeah, I know, you're a doctor (even if "only" a vet) and more or less know this stuff, but it's a lot harder to apply things to your own body, somehow.

Regardless, feel better!

See you in a couple of weeks?

I'm sorry it didn't turn out to be something that can be easily fixed, but I hope that if you're careful it won't bother you too much.

I'm glad that at least you have some answers now. The known is more manageable than the unknown, so at least you know what you're up against.
