It's amazing how much difference a night's sleep, some sunshine, a heaping handful of friendly support, and a phone call to an office manager can make.

Of course, having an incredibly busy morning at work didn't hurt, either. I love my job, and I've spent way too much time lately reading journal articles and drumming my fingers on desks waiting for appointments to arrive. Today, though, the clinic I'm working at has kept me hopping from appointment to emergency to phone call, with the end result that I actually feel useful and effective.

The surgery situation is resolved, thankfully. I've got a good relationship with the clinic that I need to cancel with, and after talking to their office manager today I have been informed in no uncertain terms that I am to go ahead with my surgery no matter what. I still need to talk to the agent I work through, and I may have to pay some sort of fine since she'll be losing my referral fee, but I should be able to go ahead and get myself taken care of. And just knowing that makes everything else feel so much less significant, worry-wise.

I think I'm going to take my lunch now, and sit in front of an open window and soak up some sunshine while I can. I can feel my ability-to-cope renewing just thinking about it....

I'm so glad, three times over: 1) for you, short-term, because you looked so tired last night; 2) for you, longer-term, because you so need to have the knee surgery now and not in September; and 3) for the office manager, maintaining my faith that there are decent sensible people in the workplace.

And then, as you say, there's today's sunshine.
