I say over and over again that simple things make me happy, but it's absolutely true. For example, everything about this weekend is making me happy. It's a long weekend, even though I had to work a half-day yesterday. It's a holiday weekend full of socializing with friends, and baking for parties - I've got a butter-pecan banana cake in the oven right now, smelling like a corner of heaven, and tomorrow I'll make a layered frozen lemon dessert that I've never tried before but that sounds absolutely heavenly. And while the weekend is social and celebratey, it's also slow - I've finished one book and started another, and my sweetie is currently taking a well-deserved nap while I catch up on online affairs.

Most importantly of all, though, it's glorious outside. Dazzlingly bright and sunny, with the sky shining unbelievably blue against the intense green leaves of the lilac bush outside my window. There's enough of a breeze that it's not too hot, but it's warm enough that I can finally dig out my summer wardrobe.

After many years of denial, I've been forced to admit that early summer is probably my favorite time of year. The mere state of not being cold is delightful, and getting enough sunlight feels like finally setting down a weight I didn't realize I was carrying. And I'm vain enough to admit that, while I can tolerate wearing sweaters, I look much better in halters and sleeveless tops than I was previously willing to admit.

Sundresses and tank tops and sandals and painted toenails and cute little straw hats and summer is almost here and it feels so damn good.....

I should note that I mentioned the blueberry buccle to [livejournal.com profile] msmemory, and got a, "Oooh -- blueberries!" (And raised the question of whether we should get some whipping cream for whipped cream with it.) If it's a consideration, she *does* like blueberries, but not lemon. (I don't know what's for whom...)

Unfortunately, when I went to the grocery yesterday for ingredients, the blueberries they had looked pretty pathetic and wilty, and were heinously expensive (to the tune of $20 for *just* enough blueberries to make one cake). So I changed plans, and was going to make a lemony thing instead.

If you have your heart set on blueberries I can do that, but just let me know so I can go in search of berries first thing in the morning....

Ach -- the best-laid plans undone by agricultural bad luck.

Nah: if the blueberries didn't look worth it, then it's not the right thing to do. I just thought I should mention, since you had asked...

Better tasty and yummy after all! It's still not really blueberry season.

Oh, yes! I took the T to Haymarket, and walked up past Old North Church to the Harbourwalk, and then along the harbour down to South Station. What a great day to be outside.
