I'm not sure whether I'm easily knocked out because I don't generally take mood-altering substances, or whether I don't generally take mood-altering substances because I'm easily knocked out. Either way, the end result is that any medication stronger than baby aspirin apparently has the ability to put me in a drug-induced coma.

I've known for a while that I'm easily knocked out by sedatives, but I always figured that that was part of their job. Codeine is supposed to put you to sleep, and there's the added fact that I'm slightly smaller than human average, so the average human dose is probably a bit much for me. And I've learned not to take codeine (or vicodin, or hydrocodone) unless I'm within falling distance of the bed when I swallow it.

But after a tension headache and shoulder tension that lasted for a week and a half escalated today to the point that I couldn't stir cake batter because my arm was too sore and weak, my sweetie marched me down to Prompt Care at the local hospital today, where the doctor diagnosed me with a nasty muscle spasm and sent me home with orders to find a chiropractor or some similar muscular therapist, as well as a handful of muscle relaxants.

Admittedly, they're marked with a warning that they 'may cause drowsiness.' I figured, though, that they're just muscle relaxants. They're supposed to make me floppy and relaxed. That's all - I assumed that I would be able to tell the difference between being un-tense and being drowsy.

Within an hour or so of taking a single dose, I was unconscious on the sofa. In the middle of the day, in spite of the fact that, under any naturally occuring circumstances, I am functionally incapable of napping whether I want to or not. In spite of having actually managed nearly eight hours of sleep last night, which is nigh record-breaking for me.

I don't think I'm going to be able to take these two to three times a day while still working, as the doctor suggested.

This is why I don't drink alcohol. Intellectually, I avoid it because I have a deep-seated averson to acting stupid, but deep in my heart of hearts I'm fairly certain that I'd fall sound asleep where I was sitting.

On a separate note, does anybody know of a decent local muscle worker? The doctor seems to think this particular muscle spasm is deep and tough enough that regular massage probably won't fix it, but something in the same category but more aggressive might seriously help.

(And apologies if this is poorly expressed or rambly, I'm still a bit gorped. Stupid muscle relaxants, making me loopy-tired.....)

He's a miracle worker, really. Many of your friends go to him, and while he is exspensive (he doesn't accept insurance, because insurance doesn't take him) he is absolutely worth it. (I make slightly more than dirt, but I find a way to pay him, as an indication of how much he's worth it.)

can you tolerate valium? it is quite an effective muscle relaxant and (in my experience) it doesn't wipe up the floor with me quite as thorougly as Flexoril does.

Valarian tea is a mild muscle relaxant. I don't generally drink because it takes very little to put me to sleep. But that means I can use alcohol in tiny amounts (1/2 glass) as a relaxant, and a little more to put me to sleep if I need to.

Good luck.

Uh, yeah. The doc gave me a muscle relaxant for "as needed," which means "when I can't sleep." Admittedly it's bc when I can't sleep it's bc my muscles are too tight, but still. It knocks me out. And that's with a small dosage - and I'm a bit larger than you. :)
