I don't usually get weekends off. This doesn't bother me too much - I still get two days off most weeks, just not in a row. But when I do manage to get an entire weekend off, it feels like a little vacation... I can make plans, I can sleep late, I can stay up late, I can pretend I'm part of the normal world...

I had such lofty plans of what I was going to accomplish with my heaping mounds of spare time. I had errands to run, people to see, a schedule to stick to. But weekends aren't really meant to be spent like that, parceled out into little appointment-slots of time. The bank will still be there during my lunch hour on Monday, and one extra day's library fines won't kill me. Neither will going without bread flour until I can stop at the grocery after work. Weekends are for doing all the necessary unnecessary things, like dozing on the sofa, and playing with the cats, going to the movies and eating popcorn and Reese's Pieces for lunch....

I did manage to accomplish one thing - I made bagels for the first time. I've got an entire kitchen full of gorgeous cookbooks pining away waiting to be used, and goodness knows i had the time. So my kitchen was taken over for a couple of days by trays full of dough in different stages of preparedness as I puzzled my way through Julia Child's mystic rituals for baking. There's something thoroughly satisfying and almost therapeutic about kneading dough - the rhythm and the exertion, maybe, and the childlike, mud-pie-mixing feel of getting your hands thoroughly gunky in a safe, excusable way. Whatever the reason, it's more fun than it probably should be. And while the results weren't the prettiest, being still a bit uneven and wrinkly on top, they definitely tasted good.

So, that was my vacation. I never made it to the post office, and I didn't even once think about stopping by the hospital. I saw a movie where I was probably the only person over 5 feet tall not accompanied by my offspring. I stayed up late, slept later, and generally wasted time.

It was exactly what I needed.
