I have a heck of a lot of stuff on my plate right now, metaphorically speaking. And most of it is busy, important, responsible grown-up stuff.
I have work to do. I have paperwork to keep myself working. I need to call the chimney people so we can have a functional fireplace. I have proofreading and editing to do for at least three different projects from four different friends, of varying degrees of urgency. My house is in mad need of cleaning. I have rehearsing to do for three different numbers and three different performances.
And all I want to do right now is play in the dirt. I have bulbs to be planted, and a garden to be weeded in preparation for having those bulbs put in. I managed to get a half dozen or so into one bed this morning, before I ran out of time and had to duck inside, proofread another ten pages of character backgrounds, find my costume hat, pack my bag for rehearsal, and make a shopping list for the afternoon's Cooks' Guild meeting, and it was the best time-waste I've had in a while.
Cold, dirty hands. Smudges of leaf-dust on my jeans and my face. A trash can full of roots and weeds that managed to squeeze their way past the weedcloth into the flower beds. Large, intimidating earthworms leaping out at me, irate at having their home disturbed. I love gardening so much, and it feels amazing to have this last chance to do it before the earth goes completely dormant for the winter.
I only hope I can eke out enough time to get the rest of the bulbs in the ground before things get too cold entirely....
