So at Arisia this past weekend, I met a very nice lady who was selling beautiful ponytail falls. They were colorful and textural and just plain awesome, and I couldn't help but keep coming back to poke at them and ogle them and generally sigh over them. They also looked like they would be alarmingly easy to make.

I could do that, I thought. In fact, I bet the hardest part would be untangling my ridiculous stash of spare yarn....

And, because the lady with the hairfalls was very nice, she eventually took pity on me and showed me how she made them. And it was, as I had suspected, alarmingly easy.

This, of course, meant that I spent most of this afternoon sorting my yarn stash by color, boggling in embarrassment at the sheer quantity of muppet-ish novelty yarns I own, and cutting them into pieces and stringing them on elastic bands.

...ending up with this:

Not bad, for a first try. Though the hardest part was, in fact, trying to squeeze my real hair into buns tiny enough to be hidden by a bunch of yarn, and I'll need to get better headbands to hide the rest of my hair.

All I need to do now is resist the urge to make more. And more....

They are SO fun to make!

There's one brand of yarn-- I think it's "Angel"?-- the super soft kind anyway, that if you string it and then twist about three strands together, you can rub the piece with your fingers and dred it. Looks TOTALLY great. Note: knot the pieces at the bottom!

I also string mine on pieces of ribbon-- lace trim works well, so does that sort of ribbed ribbon you can get really cheap that I can't remember the proper name of right now-- so I can tie them over whatever size bun(s) I've made that night. I find that easier. If yours are thick enough, and you tie it underneath, you can give the fall some height at the top and also hide the bun.

Yours look really cool BTW!

Lemme know if you ever want to make dred falls with wig hair...it's more time consuming but not nearly as hard as you'd think, and it looks SO cool. Comes in cool colors, too!

The ribbon type you're trying to remember is "grosgrain". Now, if you had asked me to remember that...

Cool - the ribbon idea sounds like it'd work really well. I made some changes from the ones I saw at the con, to make them a little fuller, and that helped; so did putting both falls around one bun.

Wig hair sounds like it'd be pretty interesting to work with. *sigh* Why can't you live next door? :)
