The downside, of course, of being back at work on a regular basis is that few days manage to hit the perfect stride that last week achieved. Instead, they tend to fall into the categories of either 'pathologically dull, with nothing to do for hours on end but stare at the walls or pretend to read irrelevant journal articles' or 'run around like a mad thing trying to do seven things at once.'
Sometimes, when you're particularly unlucky, you somehow manage to hit both at once. Like today, when I had a stretch of 3+ hours with no appointments, followed by a slam of over half a dozen sick visits in a row crammed into the end of the day, all seriously and colorfully ill, many with owners best described as challenging, that led me to be at work for two hours past the originally scheduled end of my shift.
On the one hand, I like being busy. On the other hand, though, right now I am frustrated and exhausted and worried for no good reason, and desperately hoping for a day with healthy animals and friendly clients. It's been a long week, and it's only Tuesday....
