And Now, Pictures

Okay. I had mentioned working on the ludicrous task of figuring out how to make pastry hats for eggs - in case anyone was curious as to why, the end result is hiding....
So there's this big SCA event - Crown Tourney, where the up and coming rulers are determined, and
tpau asked me if I'd help her cook the feast for the event, and if I'd be in charge of desserts. I agreed to do so, and then found out that that meant I'd be in charge of preparing a subteltie to be presented to the current royalty.
(For those of you who aren't giant medieval food nerds, a subteltie is... kind of illusion food. Most of the ones I've seen have been made of marzipan or sugar paste, shaped to look like anything from tiny fruits to people.)
Of course, I couldn't do that. At least in part because my marzipan manipulation skills are about on par with toddlers and play-doh. So instead, I decided (since Her Majesty's arms are an acorn) to make a little oak tree, with fake acorns. Acorns made out of cake, of shortbread, of little quail eggs and pastry caps, apple turnovers, stuffed apricots... and yes, marzipan.
Here's the finished project:

(
umbran made the tree)
Close-up on one of the eggs - they were my favorite part:

And, since y'all (and by y'all I mean 'one or two of you) asked, here's a picture of Scalprender:

If and when the zombies attack, this is totally going to be my weapon of choice.
.....and the damage it did.

Stitches are out now, but I wanted to at least have some proof that they were there....

b) You may have me beat in the single-stitches-earned event,
& that's saying something. One of the 40+ year old gashes in
my leg is over 2" long, but, naturally, I forget how many actual
stitches were used to make it.

Date: 2009-11-03 06:14 pm (UTC)Maybe it has something to do with the button someone once gave me which says, "Subtlety? Isn't that a medieval dessert?" :-)
