Impatience

The up and the down side of all the sudden sun and warm weather is that I'm seriously craving garden time. Everything is green and blooming, and the trees are starting to put out leaves and the lilacs are turning green and the world is slowly starting to smell good again, and I want more than anything to be building and digging and planting.
I've never been much of a flower gardener - my few attempts at that, mostly a halfhearted raised bed of pansies and violets along the side of the house, have never done very well. I don't have the best eye for what will grow well together, or what will survive where. Most of the colorful things around my house are bulbs either left by the former owners or transplanted by friends, and while I love looking around my yard and seeing bright reminders of the people who care for me, I'm reluctant to mess with any of it.
Vegetable gardening is my true forte. Somehow I've always had a knack for it, and regardless of the setting or situation, have always managed to at least coax a handful of tomatoes, zucchini, and cucumbers out of whatever patch of soil I've called home. Now that we own our own house, though, I've started truly feeding my garden urge. Every year there's more stuff I want to plant, and every year we wind up with one more bed, one more veggie we want to try growing, one more piece of our yard devoted to growing.
I spent a decent chunk of my weekend time plotting and planning for this year's endeavors - we're adding a second 4'x4' raised bed, plus separate containers for the squash, since they spread wide enough that they don't play well with others. We're going to try growing corn this year; I have no actual hope that it'll do well, but the extra bed leaves us a little space to play with, and it can't hurt to try.
So. Tomatoes, cucumbers, sugar snap peas, zucchini, yellow squash, eggplant, green beans, bell peppers, broccoli, spinach, potatoes, corn, plus the blueberry bushes and the herb garden. I'm giving up on onions and leeks, since they've never actually done very well. I've got the beds all sketched out and planned, and now I just have to wait.
And wait. And daydream about the smell of the dirt and the feel of it under my hands, and the sight of green things poking up, and the taste of my own real food.
Soon. Not soon enough, but soon.....

That said, I don't like it. I don't like where it is right now, and I don't like the way that I think it's going to go. And while it was cute, there were more plot holes in the flashback than Carter has little liver pills.
*sigh* Remember when this show was awesome?
