There needs to be some universally constant, standardized equation to calculate exactly how sick someone or something can be, in proportion to their age and/or size.

Big animals can tolerate big disease. They're strong, and sturdy, and solid. They can handle it. And older animals... while their illness may be tragic, at least they've had their chance at life. They've had healthy time, and good experiences, and if something horrible happens, it's at least partially balanced by the rest of their life.

But little things - say, kittens - shouldn't be allowed to be critically, fatally ill. It's got to violate some law of physics; you can't contain 40 pounds or 20 years worth of disease when you weigh less than a pound and a half, and have only been on this planet for eight weeks. And even when you're a little bigger, a little older, there should still be limits. Moderate illness, maybe challenging, but nothing that leaves people in tears.
